Maryann B's Experience
|
Experience description:
It
was on Long Island in the spring of 1970. It was around 7:oo pm in my kitchen
talking w/ my friend and mother. I had skipped lunch and had a busy day. I
suddenly felt very weak and nauseous. I told them I had to lay down. I went to
my room on unsteady legs closed the light, shut the door and lay down. After a
few minutes at most and fully conscious it happened. I was in a tunnel. My
impression was I was still and the tunnel was moving at great speed. In the
tunnel I saw objects in more than 3 dimensions. I would see an objects height,
weight, color (vivid) depth and what can only be described as its "Platonic
essence; (finally understood that concept). I then was thrust into what was a
rural setting. I appeared to be travelling at great speed and head first about a
few thousand feet over the landscape. I spotted a farmhouse and literally headed
for it. As I got closer I saw I wasn't slowing down and indeed was heading for a
wall! I was terrified I was going to crash head on. I braced for the crash but
instead and much to my relief I went right through it. I began to slow down and
saw a room, a dining area w/ a large family eating. I seemed to be aware a young
girl was aware of me. Just as I began to get control of this "Maserati body" and
this was kind of cool I'd like to explore...I was back in my bed, fully
conscious. What the hell happened I thought. I perhaps had heard of this
phenomena but had no details on it. The best way to describe this experience was
as if my physical body was an old, rusty model T driving clumsily down a rutted
road transformed into a Maserati doing 90 kilometers on the autobahn. When I
returned to the kitchen my mom said "Have a good rest".
At
the time of your experience was there an associated life-threatening event?
Uncertain I was diagnosed w/ hypoglycemia. I strongly suspect this condition
caused the experience.
Was
the experience difficult to express in words?
Yes It is ineffable. Again please read my detailed experience.
At
what time during the experience were you at your highest level of
consciousness and alertness?
The whole time.
How
did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience
compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More
consciousness and alertness than normal Please read of my entire experience
for details.
Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that
you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.
I'm
sorry I really don't understand this question. But I was feeling poorly and I
strongly believe I suffered a severe hypoglycemic incident.
Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that
you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.
I
heard a tremendous whooshing noise while in the tunnel. When I exited the tunnel
there was silence.
Did
you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during a time that your
consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body?
No
What emotions did you feel during the experience?
WONDER while in the tunnel. Perplexed while flying head first over the area.
Terrified I'd crash head first into the house. Relief when I passed right
through the wall of the house. Then delight as I began to get control of this
new fantastic body. Ultimately disappointment it didn't continue just as I was
able to control the "Maserati body".
Did
you pass into or through a tunnel?
Yes Again my body seemed to be still. My sense was the tunnel was moving at
great speed. I saw objects in more than 3 dimensions. I grasped the concept of
"Platonic essence" though I can't grasp it now. I was not only conscious during
the tunnel but "super conscious". After my psychic abilities increased.
Did
you see an unearthly light?
No
Did
you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable
voice?
No
Did
you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who
are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha,
etc.)?
No
Did
you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings?
No
Did
you become aware of past events in your life during your experience?
No
Did
you seem to enter some other, unearthly world?
Some
unfamiliar and strange place
After the tunnel I zoomed over a rural landscape. I saw a farmhouse and was
uncontrollably drawn toward it. I found myself not slowing down and saw I'd
crash into a wall. To my relief I passed through the wall and saw a family
having a meal. I began to slow down. I believe a young girl even seemed to see
me. Just as I began to feel I could control this I was back in my body. Bummer.
Did
time seem to speed up or slow down?
Time
seemed to go faster or slower than usual
Time
was meaningless.
Did
you suddenly seem to understand everything?
No
I seemed to have a super consciousness. It wasn't transcendental or euphoric but
incredibly and ineffably dynamic. Afterward I seemed to become more intelligent
and more intuitive. It caused me to explore and study the phenomena of the "out
of body" experience. Friends remarked I seemed to be "glowing".
Did
you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?
Uncertain
If there was a boundary it I suspect was my naturally rising glucose which
dumped me back into my clumsy, slow "model T" body.
Did
you come to a border or point of no return?
No
The experience just stopped.
Did
scenes from the future come to you?
No
Not during but soon thereafter.
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
suggesting that there either is (or is not) continued existence after earthly
life (life after death)?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
that God or a supreme being either does (or does not) exist?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
that you either did (or did not) exist prior to this lifetime?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
that a mystical universal connection or unity/oneness either does (or does not)
exist?
Uncertain I did encounter an awareness of an interconnectedness of all things
in the universe during the tunnel trip. Oh how to describe the indescribable!
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
regarding earthly lifes meaning or purpose?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
regarding earthly lifes difficulties, challenges, or hardships?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any specific information / awareness
regarding love?
No
During your experience, did you encounter any other specific information /
awareness that you have not shared in other questions that is relevant to living
our earthly lives?
No
Did
you have a sense of knowing special knowledge or purpose?
Yes As I wrote I became aware (while in the tunnel) of realities, dimensions
and meaning we can barely comprehend. I never discussed nor gave much thought to
the paranormal, though I'd have experiences; some very dramatic. Eventually
others noticed and my mother nicknamed me "the witch". The NDE erased all doubt
to this "rational, highly scientific" person.
What occurred during your experience included:
Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at
the time of your experience At the time I was in denial about my psy.
experiences. It was the hippie era and we were too busy having fun and
demonstrating to be concerned w/ mysticism. I was really rather agnostic about
this stuff.
How
accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events
that occurred around the time of the experience?
I
remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred
around the time of the experience It was yhe most vivid event of my life.
Discuss any changes that might have occurred in your life after your
experience:
Wow
you guys dig deep! I had this particular experience in 1970. I was 18. I'm now
60 and in moderately poor health. It was the hippie era. Religion was so passe!
What this particular experience did was cause to cross that great, unfortunate
divide between mysticisom and skeptical science. I became a "believer". I could
no longer deny the powerful paranormal events that were occurring w/ some
frequent regularity. I've never had an experience nor a feeling of a supreme
being as nice and comforting as that would be. As a catholic school kid I
believed but never truly felt it.
My experience directly resulted in:
Large changes in my life
Did you have any changes in your values or beliefs after the experience that
occurred as a result of the experience?
Yes My values didn't change. Back then kind atheists called ourselves "ethical
humanists". Even now I toggle between calling myself that or "ethical agnostic:"
Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful
or significant to you?
The
entire event was neaningful and revelatory. The tunnel experience felt as if I
was being shown the existence of a deeper reality; Though I didn't see a
presence I sensed a greater mind teaching me. Interesting in that it wasn't warm
or cuddly but rather emotionless but truthful. Almost non-human. It showed me
the possibility that consciousness could exist outside of the body. It also
showed me that you could go through a solid wall in that state and be just fine.
I also wonder about that young girl who seemed to make eye contact w/ me. Did
she perhaps see (or sense) a "ghost". This all brings to me Shakespeare famous
quote: "There is more to heaven and earth that are dreamed of in your
philosophy..."
Do
you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience
that you did not have before the experience?
Yes Absolutely. The "NDE' was a turning point in my belefs but now I see it as
a continuim of varied and multitudinous psychic experiences. My abilities ebb
and flow but in a dangerous or stressfull situation it's never failed me.

Have you ever shared this experience with others?
Yes
It took a few weeks for me to reveal what happened to me and I only told close
friends. They knew and trusted me and were witnesses to my abilities anyway. I
strongly suspect it deepened their spiritualism. I can't know for sure. They
really didn't know what to make of it. Back then little was known about "NDE's".
They were more impressed by my telepathic and prophetic abilities.
Did
you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your
experience?
Uncertain I think I had heard something about it but it seemed so bizarre.
Remember it was 1970. I don't believe it had any influence on my experience.
Later on I actually got my hands on the ponderous "Deathbed observations of
doctors and nurses"; I believe it was the first published study of the
phenomena. It was a cross cultural study between India and the U.S.
What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to
weeks) after it happened:
Experience was definitely real As I already wrote Isee the experience as a
continuim of psy abilities. It literally changed my life turning me into a
believer. As to "why" it occurred you'd have to ask a higher auyhority.
What do you believe about the reality of your experience at the current time:
Experience was definitely real What is said real. It was akin to having to
slog through deep, heavy mud w/ heavy, poor fitting boots to dangling your hot,
naked feet in a cool pond. I view it ultimately as revelatory. The body is slow
and heavy. The spirit is light, lightening fast. Please read my "Maserati"
analogy. What is said that your spirit vibrates at a much faster pace rings
true.
Have your relationships changed specifically as a result of your experience?
No
Have your religious beliefs/spiritual practices changed specifically as a result
of your experience?
Yes
My
skepticism about the paranormal was erased in a matter of a few minutes. I
practice no organized religion. Once you try to codify spiritualism, religion
you trap the fly in amber. Then all hell can break loose.
At
any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the
experience?
No
Is
there anything else that you would like to add about your experience?
This
event was the most lucent, dynamic thus far of my life.
Did
the questions asked and information that you provided accurately and
comprehensively describe your experience?
Yes This experience is ultimately ineffable. I used metaphors and analogies to
best describe it. I do have one more comment. If you could travel at the speed
of light reality would "bend". Your percetion would be as if you were standing
still and your enviroment was speeding past you. This somewhat mimics the
tunnel....Food for thought.
Please offer any suggestions that you may have to improve this questionnaire.
Are there any other questions that we could ask to help you communicate your
experience?
What could a national organization with an interest in near death experience
(NDE) do that would be of interest to you?
You seem to be doing it. Keep accumulating accounts, speak w/ scientists both
skeptics and believers.
Please offer any suggestions that you may have to improve this questionnaire.
Are there any other questions that we could ask to help you communicate your
experience?
It was very thorough. I've been wanting to share my experience w/ a group such
as this for a very long time. I highly commend you and the work you do.
