Experience description:
I was under general anesthesia during a four-hour surgery about two
weeks before my mother passed away. During this time, my mother was in a coma in
a hospital across town after going into renal failure.
During my experience
while I was under sedation, I found myself standing just inside a very dark
tunnel. A few feet beyond where I was standing, the tunnel ended and there was a
large area of just pure, white light. I could see beings dressed in white flying
or moving about within the light.
With me inside of the
tunnel was my mother. We were talking for a time, though I have never been able
to recall what we were talking about. It seems as though we were together for
awhile, though again, I'm not sure how long it was.
Finally, my mother said
that it was time for me to go back. She said that she would be going on into the
light in a few days, but that she would see me again soon.
Was
the kind of experience difficult to express in words?
No
At
the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening event?
Uncertain The event occurred while I was under general anesthesia
during a four-hour surgery. I'm not sure if any life-threatening events occurred
during that surgery or not.
At
what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness
and alertness?
At the end when my mother was telling me that I had to go back, but that she
would be going on soon.
How
did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience
compare to your normal every day consciousness and alertness?
Normal consciousness and alertness
At the end when my mother was telling me that I had to go back, but
that she would be going on soon.
Did
your vision differ in any way from your normal, everyday vision (in any aspect,
such as clarity, field of vision, colors, brightness, depth perception degree of
solidness/transparency of objects, etc.)?
Yes I was able to look at that bright white area without it bothering my
eyes. I'm usually very light sensitive and have to wear sunglasses if I go out
in sunlight.
Did
your hearing differ in any way from your normal, everyday hearing (in any
aspect, such as clarity, ability to recognize source of sound, pitch, loudness,
etc.)?
No
Did
you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?
Uncertain
What emotions did you feel during the experience?
I was happy to be talking with my mom, and then sad that she would be
going on and I couldn't go with her.
Did
you pass into or through a tunnel or enclosure?
Yes I was at the edge of a dark tunnel that opened into a very large light
area.
Did
you see a light?
Yes The whole area outside of the dark tunnel I was in was bathed in pure,
white light.
Did
you meet or see any other beings?
Yes My mother, who was in a coma in a hospital across town. We talked for a
while, and then she told me I had to go back and that she'd be going on within a
few days, but that she'd see me again soon. (She died August 13.)
(NDERF
note: mother died 25 days after experience)
Did
you experience a review of past events in your life?
No
Did
you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience
that could be verified later?
No
Did
you see or visit any beautiful or otherwise distinctive locations, levels or
dimensions?
Yes The pure, white, very bright area beyond the dark tunnel where I was
standing with my mom.
Did
you have any sense of altered space or time?
Yes I couldn't tell how long had passed that I was there talking with my
mother.
Did
you have a sense of knowing special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?
No
Did
you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?
Yes I wasn't able to cross out of the dark tunnel into the light because it
wasn't my time to do so.
Did
you become aware of future events?
No
Did
you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience
you did not have prior to the experience?
Yes I seem to have a lot of "synchronicity" episodes, where I'll be reading
or thinking something and someone will say the exact words that I'm reading or
thinking at the exact same second that I'm reading them. This happens to me four
or five times every day.
Have you shared this experience with others?
Yes I think it was several months after the experience that I shared it with
my family. They seemed interested, but I don't think they were influenced in any
way.
Did
you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience?
Yes I had seen some things on TV about NDEs, but not a whole lot of
information about them.
How
did you view the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it
happened:
Experience was definitely real
Were there one or several parts of the experience especially meaningful or
significant to you?
Yes,
the entire experience was very meaningful because it gave me a chance to talk
with and say goodbye to my mom before she passed away. It also showed me that
even though we were both unconscious at the time, our spirits were still able to
communicate.
How
do you currently view the reality of your experience:
Experience was definitely real
Have your relationships changed specifically as a result of your
experience?
No
Have your religious beliefs/practices changed specifically as a result of your
experience?
Yes
I'm
more spiritual without being more religious.
Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life,
medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?
No
Is
there anything else you would like to add concerning the experience?
I
treasure this experience, and I know that someday I'll be able to cross out of
the dark tunnel into the light and join my mother and other loved ones there.
And most of all, I'll be with my Lord.
Did
the questions asked and information you provided so far accurately and
comprehensively describe your experience?
Yes
