Jo M's Experience
|
Experience description:
My father died some 3 months before this experience. At the time of his
death, I felt very guilty because my overwhelming emotion was one of relief. At
91 he had decided to go through a difficult bout of chemotherapy as he wanted to
remain alive to care for my mother who was 92 and in a nursing home. He had
cared for her and looked after her for years and he felt it his duty to keep
doing that. My relief when he died was an odd response to his death and it took
me by surprise. I felt very bad about feeling this and I wasn't able to cry at
his funeral or feel sadness at his parting.
So, at about 3 months after his death I started to feel grief at his loss and I
prayed one afternoon that I might see what my father was seeing. I missed him.
My father was a Christian and had been faithful to his beliefs throughout his
life. My faith led me to believe that he was with our Lord but I had this strong
desire to 'know'. So I prayed that I might 'see what my Dad was seeing'. The
next day, I woke up and realized that my request to God was inappropriate and
that no-one has the right to ask for such a revelation; it is part of our faith
in God that we don't 'know' but 'believe'. So I offered my apologies to God and
talked to Him about my feelings.
Later that day I was vacuuming in our family room when I suddenly heard a sound
that can only be described as 'whooshing' - a little like changing a slide in
those old slide viewers. And then, in front of me, was a scene. It was a field
of long, pale yellowish grass that reached up to my knees. In front of me was a
winding road that led over to the corner of the field. Surrounding the area was
a line of very dark, green trees with the glossiest leaves I have ever seen. In
the corner of the field, where the road ended, stood a very high, dominant tree.
It too had the darkest green, glossiest, healthy foliage. But the odd thing
about it was, as I looked at this beautiful tree, I felt slightly afraid. I
looked back at the field and felt no fear but on looking back and up at the tree
I felt the fear return. This puzzled me.
Suddenly, the scene vanished and the whooshing sound came again, like a change
in a slide. I'm not sure how long the vision lasted but it was probably only
about a minute.
To this day, I can see that scene very clearly. I am convinced that it was God's
way of acknowledging my request and apology and His way of showing me that there
is indeed life after death, but that the barrier of trees represents the barrier
to our 'knowing' rather than 'believing'.
I am still amazed by the vision, and in awe of our God who can hear what we ask
and reply with such wisdom and compassion.
