I can't swim, but we were playing a game where we would slide down a slide and land in a raft below it.  I had slipped off and ended up in the deep end of the pool.

It was ethereal, very dreamlike, once I realized what was happening.  I don't remember if water ever got in my lungs, it was just funny.  I was very afraid and scared, and then I opened my eyes: I could see and breathe underwater, and that shouldn't happen.  I remember both pleasant surprise from this, but also deep concern that I might not make it out of the pool.

So I started walking, almost with no thought of what I was doing, to the shallow end.  Eventually, I heard a voice telling me to go for a hand, then one of the other girls pulled me out and rescued me.

I don't remember ever grabbing her hand, though.

At the time of your experience was there an associated life-threatening event?   No  

Was the experience difficult to express in words?....No....

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?....More consciousness and alertness than normal    When I realized I could breathe and see, and walk on the pool's bottom to safety.....It was clearer, sharper, but at the same time, everything looked more abstract.  I could see underwater, and I remember the beautiful sunbeams.

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.    Sharper, more accurate, but at the same time, more abstract.  My field of vision could see all around me, and I remember seeing beautiful sunbeams.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience.    It was about normal, for what you'd expect in a pool, very hushed and quiet.  Except for a voice telling me to go for the girl's hand.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?....Confusion, fear, eventually replaced by pleasant calmness.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice?....I heard a voice I could not identify    I simply heard a voice telling me to go for the girl's hand.  I can't place a gender on it, I just remember it telling me to.  Then I was being pulled out and all was well.

Did time seem to speed up or slow down?....Time seemed to go faster or slower than usual....It felt like it slowed down for me, enough to give me time to walk towards the shallow end and then the hand.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened:....Experience was definitely real    Surreal, couldn't believe it happened, but kind of had to.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience at the current time:....Experience was definitely real....It was definitely real.  I was drowning, I was told to walk towards a hand, and suddenly I'm free.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience?....Uncertain    I tried drowning again a few years ago.  I was in my boyfriend's pool with a few of his friends, when I suddenly slipped off the float I was floating on and back into the pool.  I was able to breathe and see again, and walked forward until I saw my boyfriend reach his hand down to grab me, and he swam me to safety.
