John R's Experience
|
Experience description:
I am
not sure what causes my OBEs. I can recognize when I am having sleep paralysis
and I control for the most part my ability to have an OBE. My sleep paralysis
happens when I am extremely tired for the most part. I can hear high frequency
buzzing sounds and it feels like electricity taking over my entire body. What
follows is complete paralysis. My OBEs will only happen if I attempt to fall
asleep while lying on my back. I cannot have a blanket or a pillow on top of me
and I have to have my arms free. When I feel the sleep paralysis coming on I
literally tell myself to relax and go with it. I slowly attempt to roll to the
side and fall off of the bed or the couch. As I fall I am lifted up to the
ceiling. Sometimes I feel like I push myself away from the ceiling. At this
point I can pretty much control my OBE and wander about the house or outside,
floating through walls and doors. I have never had a terribly bad experience.
All have been good for the most part.
I
have seen people I do not recognize. When this happens I get scared and I force
my self to come back. At first I though I was having seizures because of the
buzzing and electrical feeling. I did some internet research and I have found
that my brain may be releasing the chemical it uses to paralyze the body during
REM prematurely. So basically I am able to dream but awake at the same time.
Please note this happens to me the vast majority of the time when I first lay
down. Rarely does it happen after a long period of sleep. Also, sometimes I
can have repeated OBEs over and over again. Again, I recognize the ability to
control the dreamlike state and I have a good method of allowing the OBE to
happen. I actually look forward to having them. I do not think I am special or
chosen or anything like that. I truly believe I may have a sleep disorder. I
hope you find my thought interesting. I would love to talk to other individuals
who share my ability to have OBEs. Most people think I'm a bit nutty probably.
Then I tell them to research sleep paralysis on the internet. They are
surprised to find thousands who get it.
Any
associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the
experience?
No
Was
the kind of experience difficult to express in words?
No
At
the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening
event?
No
What was your level of consciousness and alertness during the experience?
Very
good. As stated above it almost always happens just prior to falling asleep.
In a very tired state but still aware and awake.
Was the experience dream like in any way?
It
is dream like only in that logically speaking I try to tell myself it is a
dream. In other words I believe my brain and body are sometimes ready for REM
much earlier than a normal person. The actual experience is much more real,
vivid and much more life like than dreamlike.
Did
you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?
Uncertain I have never attempted to look back at my body. My sense of
feeling (touch is not great) although I can grasp things and I can remember
feelings of touch. A good example is a test that I gave to myself to see if my
experience was real. Knowing I locked the side door of my house prior to going
to bed, when the SP came on and I had an OBE, I floated out to the side door and
unlocked it. When I came out of the OBE I checked the door and it was still
locked. I can remember physically unlocking the door while in the OBE and I
felt it. Not sure if this answers the question completely.
What emotions did you feel during the experience?
At
first I was scared to death. Then I learned more about sleep paralysis and OBEs
and now I look forward to having both. Every now and then I see people I do not
recognize and I do get scared. More often than not by a wide margin my
experiences are positive.
Did
you hear any unusual sounds or noises?
Loud
high frequency buzzing. Sometimes with SP I do feel a presence in the room or
in another room and I get a little scared. If I fail to initiate the OBE then I
force myself to move abruptly to snap out of the SP. For the most part when I
hear something when in SP I immediately go into OBE mode and try to find the
source of the noise. I'm getting chills as I write this lol !!
LOCATION DESCRIPTION:
Did you recognize any familiar locations or any locations from familiar
religious teachings or encounter any locations inhabited by incredible or
amazing creatures?
No I have not experience god like creatures or unearthly
beings/creatures. I did once see a UFO outside of my Wilkes Barre home during
an OBE. Again, I consider my experience scientifically explainable so I don't
believe I really saw a UFO. I also had an experience where I floated outside of
my house in Hunlock Creek, traveled across the road and into the woods for quite
a distance. I found open fields, several barn like dwellings and two ponds. I
entered one of the barns and saw an old lady sitting in a rocking chair. She
looked right at me but didn't say anything. I got scared and forced myself
back. About 6-9 months later my wife, daughter and I looked into buying an old
farmhouse with 95 acres for sale in the same general area that I traveled to
during my OBE. There were several barns and two ponds on the property. This is
the only truly "spooky" experience I have had.
Did
you see a light?
Yes Sometime vivid lights. More often than not I do not see bright lights
though. As a side not I have seen orbs. One after another for a period of
about fifteen minutes. (not when in OBE) but wide awake at dusk. Nobody in my
family could see them just me. It only happened once.
Did
you meet or see any other beings?
Yes Please see above. (the lady in the rocking chair) Sometimes I check on
my daughter and my wife during OBEs. Sometimes I go into my fathers room and
check on him. He lives with us. I have attempted to travel long distances but
it seems that after certain period my ability to concentrate on the OBE fades.
For the most part I come in contact with people I know. Oddly, they are always
doing what they are suppose to be doing. Sleeping or watching television. If I
could master the ability to make the OBEs last longer I am sure I would come in
contact with much more.
Did
you experiment while out of the body or in another, altered state?
Yes
Please see above remarks. I have attempted to visit friends as well as family
members. The only thing I witnessed that I would not know about is the property
I mentioned above with the barns and ponds. I always felt this was coincidence,
but I admit it makes me think a little. I have moved physical objects while in
OBE but they are not moved when I come out of it.
Did
you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience
that could be verified later?
No
response
Did
you notice how your 5 senses were working, and if so, how were they
different?
Yes Hearing was good. Not as good as in full conscious state. Same
goes for sight, and touch. I cannot recall anything regarding smell.
Did
you have any sense of altered space or time?
Yes The episodes are not like a traditional dream. They are much more vivid
and I can recall almost every detail. I can control my actions for the most
part. At the same time it is much different than being completely awake and
living normally. So something is altered. Not sure if space and time are
altered or if I am truly awake and dreaming at the same time. I'm thinking the
latter.
Did
you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or
purpose?
No
Did
you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?
Yes I think the answer is yes. As stated earlier. A period of time which
is directly associated with distance goes by and I can no longer concentrate
enough to keep the OBE going. For instance I almost always try to travel as far
as I can. The farther away from my home I attempt to travel the harder the
concentration becomes.
Did
you become aware of future events?
No
Were you involved in or aware of a decision regarding your return to the
body?
Yes
Did
you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience
that you did not have prior to the experience?
No
Did
you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
No
How
has the experience affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices?
Career choices?
Not
at all.
Has
your life changed specifically as a result of your experience?
No
Have you shared this experience with others?
Yes They laugh and smile a lot. Most people either think I'm a little crazy
for telling them. (at least that's the impression I get) I have spoken to a few
people who get sleep paralysis and they are very happy that they can talk to
someone else who gets it. Then I tell them that I take it further and turn it
into an OBE.
What emotions did you experience following your experience?
At
first very scared and then happy.
What was the best and worst part of your experience?
The
worst was the first time I experienced sleep paralysis. Not knowing what was
going on. It continued to be scary until I researched it and found it is pretty
normal. The best experience was my first OBE. After I recognized I could
actually cause an OBE by staying calm during the sleep paralysis and telling
myself to go with it.
Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life,
medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?
No
Did
the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively
describe your experience?
Yes
